In addition to "try before you buy" and all the other good advise offered,
take someone either with you or have him / her present when you play
different mouthpieces. If you are studying with someone currently I would
see if they share your opinion on changing or would help you pick a
mouthpiece. If not, work with another good player in your selection
process. Short of that, if you have a good recording device, tape
yourself. What you hear while you are playing is not what others hear (and
unless you play just for your own enjoyment, what others hear counts more).
