No orchestra I've ever played in had a formal policy about behavior on
stage immediately prior to a concert. And I agree, there ought to be
some rules of decorum about it. At the very least (and this problem
has always bugged me), I wish the musicians would refrain from running
through large sections of their parts while on stage before the begin-
ning of the concert. The principal trumpet playing his opening to
Mahler 5 over and over, or the promenade from Pictures, the clarinetist
doing his Pine of Rome solo, right there on stage for everybody in the
audience to hear. I guess I just don't like the idea of broadcasting
the themes and music from the music on the concert program before the
performance actually begins.
