whoa, hold on a minute there. in many areas of the country, problems with
weapons and drugs have been around for generations. in my high school,
there were people in gangs that have been fighting each other for over 100
years, long before gang affiliation was fashionable.

also, national surveys show that since the 1960's, drugs use has been
cyclical, though reasonably constant, among high school students. in all
that time, between 40% and 55% of high school students admit to some use
of illegal drugs. clearly, this is not a problem of the current
generation. it's just more widely acknowledged today, like teen pregnancy
(whereas 30 years ago, girls would just suddenly disappear to go live with
their cousins 500 miles away...).
