Subj: [kl] Serial numbers

Hello All,

I am wondering if anyone on the list knows anything about (or can direct me
to someone who does) serial numbers on instruments, and how these can be
used to date an instrument. I have a twelve-key Albert system clarinet at
home at the moment, which was made by V. Kohlert Sons, who, according to
Langwill, flourished in Graslitz Czechoslovakia from 1880-1945. It is
stamped with the number 1982, and I am hoping this will be able to tell me
more definitely exactly when in this time it was made. It is a C clarinet
with a very nice wooden mouthpiece, but needs a few minor repairs before it
can be played.
Thanks for any help anyone can offer,
Melanie
