Speaking of which. I just got two cds that speak well about what I am trying
to say about technique in particular. Fortunately, the two clarinetists in
question are also great musical artists who play in tune and with expressive
sounds.

#1 Nobody Else But Me. . .Buddy DeFranco and the Metropole Orchestra
(available on Buddy's Website)

#2 La Clarinette a L'Opera. . .Alessandro Carbonare

I heard Carbonare play the "Cavalleria Rusticana" Fantasia live and it was
one of the most awe-inspiring technical displays I have ever experienced.
Some opera fantasias are less difficult than they sound. This one is awsomely
difficult and he plays it brilliantly. He also plays the much much easier
Rigoletto (but I haven't heard that yet).

Buddy's cd is one of those things you just have to hear. Symphony Orchestra
is not the ideal backing for Jazz usually, but the orchestrations in this
case are excellent. A colleague of mine who arranged a BdF concert a few
months ago gave me this cd and I am terribly grateful. If someone said to me
"you know, Buddy DeFranco is the greatest clarinetist of the 20th century" I
couldn't really argue. He's played at the highest possible level for over 50
years. That's awesome. Apparently when he played in Jersey a few months ago
he just blew everyone away. He's 79 years old! This particular cd was made
about 20 years ago.

These guys are not 'c major virtuosos.' By the way, when I said that I was
referring to students I coach, not people in the profession.
