Nick,

Very good observation. Which brings me to this thought....
Over the years I have observed a huge variation in "clarinet sound", from
one player to another. Many metaphors come to mind but I'll avoid
them....(Dan will zing me..:-)
The point I want to make is that the difference (comparative) in sound from
player 1 on the Bb instrument and player 2 on the C instrument may not be as
"noticeable"; as player 1 and a different player 2, both with Bb
instruments.

Back to my short post to Dan....."or, on who's playing". This was in
response to Dan's post describing Bob Levin's instant observation that a
clarinet player sitting next to him was playing C clarinet. Dan said, "I
suppose it all depends on who is listening."....my reply, "or, on who's the
player" was to point out another possibility. The possibility that not
everyone who plays C clarinet sounds all that different than what would be
considered characteristic to the Bb instrument.
