Yes. That fits with the 'Gary Carr' metaphor I mentioned in the other
post, doesn't it?

Of course, you want the 'right' overtones excited, so that the sound of
the fundamental (in its 'bel canto' incarnation) is perceived as rich,
complete and 'whole'. Difficult to characterise what that means --
perhaps the only answer is that it all defers to the ear in the end.
