Dan,

I haven't had a problem. Security does take a good look at the case and I
have always had to open it for them. In recent months they have been using
the/a bomb detection machine. (swabbing and placing the cloth into some kind
of explosive materials test unit) When I bought my bass case (several years
ago now), Howard showed me how to approach the security and stewards to
minimize over-reaction to the length of the case. It had to do with how I
positioned the case over my shoulder as I carried it on. Clever guy, Howard.
This is really not applicable now as the security is treating the world in a
different way now. I have found that even in these crazy times that people
(at least a few) do understand our concerns for the safety and security of
our instruments. If I have to check the case....I will worry...but not much.
As you know...it's tough. As a precaution, I have had a simple and heavy
(1000 den) nylon cordura bag built to slip the case into. This should keep
the leather from being damaged if I do have to check the case. It is just a
simple tube with drawstring at one end. I had the seamstress quilt the bag
with foam and I had her line it with a waterproof material. I bought the
material at a local fabric store and one of my neighbors did the very simple
sewing work. By layers....nylon shell, foam quilted, waterproof lining. I
surrendered two of my comp. tickets for the opera next year for the kind
offer, by my neighbor, to sew the bag.
I also carry on my mouthpieces and critical reeds in a fanny pack. Just in
case....I have spent many years selecting clarinets...but feel that these
can be replaced. Mouthpieces are a different story.
One of the guys that plays horn in our orchestra always says, "if I lose the
thing....I'll have to retire". The smile comes next....
