In reply to Lawrence Whitney:

In ALL military service bands, the players are ALL enlisted. In the DC
bands, members hold the enlisted ranks of E-5 and above.

The only officers are the band commander, the deputy commander, and in the
case of the DC bands, there may be additional staff officers.

The members and conductors in all of the DC bands are a different matter
however. They are ALL officers of various ranks.

If I am not mistaken, in military bands there ARE NO officer players. All
players are enlisted; DIRECTORS are officers, or in some cases, warrant
officers. At one point in my Air Force career I heard they were looking
for band directors, but the personnel people made it VERY clear to me that
I would NEVER be released from duty as a flying officer to be a band
director.

If you have to mic a saxophone, the rest of the band is TOO LOUD!
