Subj: [kl] Modern Basset Horn designs

The "Beg, borrow, steal" post about basset horns reminded me of something
that's been on my mind for a while.

I have to confess to being very fond of the sound of the basset horn, from
the little I've heard of it (recordings and performances of the Mozart
Requiem and one Boulez piece) and the one occasion I actually got to play on
one.

I recently read in the "Cambridge Companion to the Clarinet" that there are
a couple of different bell designs favoured by modern players - the "normal"
metal bell, and what was described in the Cambridge Companion as (quoting
from memory here) "a flared wooden bell" (the latter being felt to be more
"authentic").

So... what gives? I've never seen a modern basset horn with this second
design. Does it really make a difference? Is it worth going for if I ever
want to buy a basset horn? Who makes it? And does anyone have any photos?
;-)

Cheers,

-- Joe
