<Vibrato, I think is more of an issue with classically trained
American clarinetists than in other countries because America
is the birthplace of "jazz" and "legit" musicians don't want

of the method books.>

And yet there have been jazz musicians who have combined the best of both
worlds as performers and thrown composition in to boot. I remember hearing
Jimmy Hamilton warming up backstage with Duke at the Calif. State Fair in
the forties. His tone was as beautiful as any legit clarinetist's, with
flourishes thrown into his noodling that would leave most of us standing
gape-mouthed. Too bad improvisation has been substantially squeezed out of
"classical" music as an honored tradition. Too bad the vast reservoir of
talent in the black community is left out of the legit world as is being
done right now in my town's school system as they cut instrument budgets.
(The rich neighborhoods don't care because they have their supplementary
auctions to beef up things.) And so the world goes. Those as has
gets..and gets.
