I heard that Kell started using the vibrato when the clarinet played along
with singers in an opera. I heard that he matched the speed and intensity of
the singer. This might just be just rumor but that is what i heard from my
high school clarinet teacher back in the sixties. Has anybody else heard
this?

As far as Kells rubato, I personally like it in some selections and I don't
like it in others. I have his recording of the Stravinsky Three Pieces (on a
45 rpm record!) and I personally don't like the great amount of rubato he
uses in the second movement, but that is just me.
