I recall that, when Stoltzman was first becoming known as a classical
soloist, Time magazine had an article about him, including an interview.
The interviewer asked about his history and experience and what orchestras
he had played in on his way to being a soloist. His response was that he
hadn't played in any orchestras. When asked why not, he said he was never
able to get through the auditions!

This is, of course, from memory, and is not an accurate quote of the
article. At best, with luck, it retains the sense of the interview.
