Lelia-

Historical note-When I started studying in'37 or '38, the cost was $2.00 for
a 1/2 to 3/4 hour lesson. That gradually increased to $5.00 in the next 7
or 8 years.

Concerning the 2 hour lesson. Scott Ellington, my teacher, lives in a
southern suburb of Ft. Myers. I live in NE Cape Coral and the Cape is north
of Ft. Myers. It is a 45 to 60 minute drive, depending on the tourist
season. The Cape Coral/Ft. Myers area together with a number of other
suburbs covers a rather large area. From a practical standpoint, it makes
sense to cut the number of trips in half.. In addition, earlier on, we had
found that the 1 hour lesson was just too short to get done what we wanted
to accomplish.

So the 2 hour lesson works out quite well. It gives us enough time to
really accomplish a lot each lesson. I practice 2 to 3 hours a day, with
very few missed days, so I can be very well prepared for the 2 hour
sessions.

Regards,

practicing.)

As a child and teenaged piano student in the 1950s and 1960s, I took a
one-hour lesson, once a week. (The going rate then, and there, was $20 an
hour. Today I imagine a teacher would starve on that!) Although my teacher
tended to give students extra time, I don't think I knew anybody who
*officially* took two-hour lessons, so I wonder: Are two-hour lessons
unusual today? Are you taking lessons of that length, spaced that far
apart,
because you prefer them that way, or because the teacher prefers them,
or...?

I ask because I'm making tentative gestures toward playing somewhere other
than in the attic. That may mean it's time to find a teacher. I wonder how
people can get anything done in half an hour. Not sure whether I'd be
better
off with the familar one hour lesson or something else.

These plans may quickly succumb to the stage fright problem that kept me in
the attic in the first place. However, if anybody recommends a good
clarinet
/ saxophone teacher in the Falls Church- Vienna-Arlington area of Virginia
(preferably within a mile or so of a subway station or bus line), who will
teach an experienced but not expert adult amateur, please reply privately .

. unless you're on Yahoo, since for reasons unknown and definitely
unappreciated, AOL is still blocking my mail from Yahoo subscribers!
