If you're looking for a clarinet teacher anywhere in the Washington DC area,
the place to start is with the service bands. I know a lot of the clarinet
players in those ensembles teach lessons and many of them live in VA. And
even if none of them are available to teach lessons, they will definitely
know the other teachers in the area to refer you to. I live in MD just
outside of Washington and take lessons with a former Army field band
clarinetist who lives in Ft. Meade, MD.

Sorry I'm not replying privately, but I am on yahoo. By the way, a lot of
my friends on AOL aren't having problems getting my mail so it may be

As a child and teenaged piano student in the 1950s and 1960s, I took a
one-hour lesson, once a week. (The going rate then, and there, was $20 an
hour. Today I imagine a teacher would starve on that!) Although my teacher
tended to give students extra time, I don't think I knew anybody who
*officially* took two-hour lessons, so I wonder: Are two-hour lessons
unusual today? Are you taking lessons of that length, spaced that far
apart,
because you prefer them that way, or because the teacher prefers them,
or...?

I ask because I'm making tentative gestures toward playing somewhere other
than in the attic. That may mean it's time to find a teacher. I wonder how
people can get anything done in half an hour. Not sure whether I'd be

These plans may quickly succumb to the stage fright problem that kept me in
the attic in the first place. However, if anybody recommends a good
clarinet
/ saxophone teacher in the Falls Church- Vienna-Arlington area of Virginia
(preferably within a mile or so of a subway station or bus line), who will
teach an experienced but not expert adult amateur, please reply privately .
