Dear Mr. Lacy,
We are all familiar with the fact that you can indeed purchase
Richard Stoltzman CD's in K-Mart, because he has such "mass appeal". I
respect Mr. Stoltzman for having created so many new venues for the
clarinet, and he is a very nice man. However, I would rather see Jon
Manasse become the "poster boy" of clarinet playing. In fact, I blew up
his picture on a Vandoren advertizement in "The Clarinet", into a
full-sized poster. Different people have different things that they
admire about other people's playing, and I personally do not feel that
excited about Richard Stoltzman's playing. We are all entitled to select
our own "superstars" based on our personal taste. I don't necessarily
think that having "mass appeal" is something that appeals to me. ANNIE
