Perhaps this statement should be qualified with "classical"? With no
offrense intended to classical music, names such as Benny Goodman and
Pete Fountain and Artie Shaw are probably better known to the world at
large.

In the classical world, don't names such as Leister and Daniels and
Emma Johnson and Gigliotti (and the list goes on...) command more
_universal respect_? Whether "respect" and "better known" are the same
thing as "superstar" is open to debate, I suppose.

It wouldn't surprise me if Sabine Meyer's and Michelle Zukovsky's names
are known to as many (or more?) classical clarinetists because of the
gender equality debate.

What is the purpose of a language? =A0 To be beautiful or wise or
pleasurable in itself? Or to describe many different things ---
beautiful or not --- to other people? This is why the question of
whether music is a 'language' is relevant.
