If they are anything like similar rods on older bassoons and other woodwind
instruments, the rods won't be threaded. Rather, they are held in place
only by friction. Just grasp the end of the rod with pliers and pull it
straight out, turning slightly at the same time to make it easier to remove.
This type of rod has a disadvantage and an advantage. They may tend to work
themselves out of the key, but if they do, it's easy to just push them back
in.
