I have been away for the past 8 days, which is why this is late, but Howard
Klug is at Indiana University (actually, everyone just referred to him as
'Klug', so I never knew his first name, but I can't imagine that there's
another Klug clarinet player), which is where I just came from. I was there
for the annual music camp in a band under the direction of Ray Cramer (very
awesome). The guy who lead our sectionals, Scott Schleuter, was one of
Klug's students. At the faculty recital he performed Louis Cahuzac
"Variations Sur Un Air Du Pays D'oc" (I think that's right), and just
absolutely blew everyone away. It was by far one of the most incredible solo
performances I've ever heard (live or recorded). I've never heard anything
played so fast. Anyway, when he was Klug's student, he had been told that he
was an embarrassment to the organization and that he'd never accomplish
anything on clarinet. Heh, don't think I could handle that kind of critism.
But, geez, I agree...his students can PLAY!
