Actually, one of the fun parts of "Bill & Neil's Excellent Adventure"
has been to play our composition with my bell vs. Finale on my computer.
The sound characters (tone colors) are entirely different, and of course
my playing has more dynamic variation than the computer's voice does.
These differences change the character of our music entirely.

If I were composing with my clarinet in hand and a pianist sitting next
to me, instead of listening to computerized instruments, I'm sure that I
would be writing something entirely different. When you take into
account that Neil is using voice as his instrument, I can understand how
his concept of the harmony probably has a completely different character
than what I hear in my house. This may explain why I have heard
something in our music, such as a suggestion of "flatted drone", that he
hasn't heard.

In consideration of previous discussions about C clarinet vs. A or Bb, I
am beginning to understand how much difference a small change in 'tone
color' can make. I recommend the exercise (playing *your own*
composition on clarinet vs computer) as an especially effective way of
coming to appreciate this effect.

The point is: when you compose something yourself, you have an
especially strong feeling for how it should sound, and when you hear it
played with a change in sound character, the effect *really* hits you.

Cheers,
Bill
