This is simply NOT true - because I've run into more than one highly
skilled clarinetist who picked up MY different instrument, with MY
different mouthpiece, and MY different ligature, and MY different
(inferior, commercial) reed strength/brand, and played it for a
demonstration, and managed to sound exactly like they sounded 15 seconds
earlier on their Selmer-Pyne-Rovner-Oliveri set up.

I'm not saying that functioning, quality equipment is moot. I'm saying a
good player should be able to create a characteristic sound by their own
effort.
