Shouryu -

You are absolutely correct. I get 80 to 90% of good reeds out of a box,
with a modest amount of sanding and trimming. They may not all be of major
symphony principal quality, but when I have worked on a reed, it is
generally a good and responsive reed.

Recently, I was about to discard two reeds that had been reasonably good,
but seemed to be considerably past their "prime".
However, I spent a little time sanding some warping that had crept in, did a
bit of balancing and trimming and voila!! a couple of pretty good restored
reeds. Used one of them in my lesson Monday, with good results. Scott
remarked that my tone was really "singing".

I currently have 9 good reeds that I use in rotation. Some a little soft,
some a little firm and some just right. This "Three Bears" routine, keeps
my embouchure flexible and adaptable. After a couple minutes of practicing,
all of these reeds work very well.

Regards,

Gene N.

Does that make those of us who are able to make 90% of the commercial
reeds we buy work perfectly well bad, sub-standard players who should
never be heard even in a practice room?

Or does that mean that maybe we've learned to cope?
