Unless, of course, I do something in response that happens to give
your new material a different complexion than the expectation you're
forecasting above. All of what you're saying is speculative, and
*hopeful* speculation at that, it seems. Since your propensity to
think is apparently irrepressible (shame on you), I must insist that
you not do it out loud. Telling me what you think the music is do-
ing or how it's *going* to operate is tantamount to baiting me with
suggestions. How does that humorous quip go? "Playing chess against
myself is boring. I mean, half the time I already know what my next
move is going to be!" Playing this musical game is no more fun when
its element of unpredictability is weakened than it is to play chess
when your opponent tells you what he's thinking about doing next and
why. I'm not saying that I'm so weak of mind that I'm going to try
to meet your expectations, but the fact that you have predefined
ideas about the function and aesthetic of your material sets up a
dynamic where, when I do something that renders a different out-
come from your expectations, there is the specter of dissatisfac-
tion on your part, disappointment even, and then you can't possibly
be enjoying the game. Embrace the uncertainty, grasshopper. Revel
in the unknown and hope to be whisked away to realms of musical in-
ventiveness beyond your compulsion to know the future.

Guido so that I can slap you up a bit, uninterrupted like, until
you stop unwittingly spoiling my fun. Oh, and it's definitely cur-
