Lark has a downright shabby reputation among people who deal in and play
folk instruments. One of its common names is "Shark in the Morning." It's
widely known as one of the major importers and sellers of Asian-made Irish
and Scottish bagpipes, $350 6-keyed Irish flutes (a decent one by a
reputable maker in the UK, the US, or Ireland will run you at least $1000 if
not more), and other stuff that needs to be sent out to a repairman for
finishing almost as soon as you unpack it. This stuff I suppose is the
equivalent of the Winston or Jean Baptiste saxophone. It looks like, almost
plays like, but is made by people with no real sense of what they're doing,
and who are being systematically ripped off by the jobbers who contract for
their services, besides. Buying a Pakistani bagpipe, even if you get a
decent one, is something like getting a pair of Nikes or Reeboks...you might
want to ask who made it and how much they got paid.

That said, Lark is also known to have stuff you can't buy anyplace else,
i.e., tarogatos; and they're known to carry a huge inventory of used
instruments. But everything comes with a large "caveat emptor" sign
attached.

In grief you're at least feeling a rich, deep feeling. In depression you
don't even have that, it's just that awful feeling of nullity."--Dick Cavett
