I thought Kelly's suggestions were excellent, but found myself being
amused again, remembering the story of the arrangement above.

The story is that the publishers of the Three Romances wrote to Schumann
asking permission to issue a version for clarinet and piano, to boost
sales.

But Schumann refused, saying that he had had the oboe in mind when
writing the piece, and had he been writing for clarinet, would have
written differently.

This story, as I recall, is printed on the first pages of the piano part
of one edition -- an edition that includes an alternative part for
clarinet.

I mean, ******* composers. What do they know?
