Subj: [kl] Oklahoma Clarinet Symposium, 2002
Date: Tue, 11 Jun 2002 08:36:42 -0400

I just got back from the Oklahoma Clarinet Symposium, and it was just
wonderful. In some ways I enjoy Dr. Etheridge's Symposiums more than the
ICA's ClarinetFests because they are more affordable and a more intimate
gathering. I heard a few clarinetists that I had never heard before,
including Dr. Rebecca Rischin, assistant professor of clarinet at Ohio
University in Athens, Ohio. I was particularly touched by Rebecca's
great tone and Klezmer stylings of a Hebraic sounding piece, "Visions in
the Dark" by J. Flowers. Dr. Ray McClellan, professor of clarinet at the
U or Georgia, played a piece that really touched me, Sonata for Clarinet
& Piano by Nino Rota, with beautiful tone and musicianship. Both Ray and
Rebecca are students of David Weber, and it was evident in their
musicianship and tone.
Later on I ran into Larry Guy, a former classmate at Oberlin (1968)
who has compiled, narrated and edited a CD, "The Legacy of Daniel
Bonade" -- Performances by the legendary clarinetist from 1923 - 1947.
Larry did a great job of collecting these segments of Bonade's career in
chronoogical order, some off of old 78's, with amazingly good sound.
Total running time: 73:50 min. Cost of CD, $16. Larry is now free
lancing in NYC and teaching at Vassar, Bard College, Julliard and
Barnard.
Julian Bliss played a joint recital with his teacher, Howard Klug,
including a provacative duo by Michael Kibbe, "Serenade, Op. 131" --
Tango, Blues & Hora, that I went and purchased from their Woodwindina,
Inc. booth, along with some more of their publications.
Later on I went to Robert DiLutis' booth and purchased one of his
new, affordable, reed cases that fits in my BAM case. I also purchased a
clarinet quarted that he and his wife commissioned, Three Tangos for
Clarinet Quartet, arranged by John Russo.
Dr. Diane Cawein and Dr. Denise Schmidt played an exciting joint
recital, including a performance by Denise of Bela Kovacs "Homage a M.
de Falla for solo clarinet" that I ordered from Luyben, and a piece by
Luigi Bassi, "Gran Duetto Concertato" for E-flat and B-flat clarinets
with piano, that is soon to be published. This is one of the pieces that
Dr. Diane discovered and resurrected when she researched for her
Doctorate in Italy. The piece is written in the "Opera Fantasy" style
and is a great showcase for the Eb and Bb clarinets. After hearing their
performance, I wanted to go out and buy an Eb clarinet.
I am getting tired of writing. Everybody at the Symposium sounded
wonderful. Ron Odrich and Paquito d'Rivera were both awesome. Jon
Manasse, as always, was a total delight. His masterclasses were
interesting and insightful. On his recital, he played a piece, "Slow
Dance" by James Cohn that really got to me. Dr. Etheridge did a great
job. I accidentally missed a couple of performances that I would have
like to have heard, including Linda Bartley from Wisconsin. This was the
best Symposium I have attended. ANNIE
