Since I am a 73 old amateur with the usual amount of wrist arthritis,
resting the horn on my knees is mandatory. Since I study and play for my
own enjoyment, amazement and accomplishment and have no desire to
"concertize", this is not a problem. However, if I were to appear as a
soloist, I would sit down when playing. Several professionals on the list
have, in the past, remarked that sitting when soloing is quite acceptable
When I began resting my horns on my knees, I was amazed by the freedom and
relaxation that this allowed my right hand, wrist and arm. This has and
continues to improve my technique.
A neck strap would be a possible aid to one wishing to stand or (God forbid,
march) while playing double lip.
The advantages of double lip playing has been so beneficial to my playing,
that any minor disadvantages are of little consequence. The change to
double lip and consequent improvement in my tone and technique continues to
amaze my teacher. He plays single lip on Bb & A, but double lip on Bass.
He's going to experiment with double lip on Bb & A during his off-season
this summer.

In your post you mentioned that you switched to double lip embouchure. Do
you find it necessary to be sitting down while playing double lip to rest
the
bell of the clarinet on your knee for support (for example, when playing
notes above the staff)? It seems that it would be difficult for one to play
double lip while standing. If you have encountered this, how have you dealt
with it when playing in a recital setting where the soloist would
traditionally be expected to stand while playing?
