My high school band director, a professional clarinet player for nearly
twenty years, had a similar piece made for his lower teeth by his dentist.
I improvised a solution, based on that principle. If you go to a sporting
goods store, you can buy mouthguards that you drop in boiling water for
a few seconds and then put in your mouth to get a custom fit (usually
found near the football or soccer sections). I cut one of those into
small pieces (probably 4cm by 2cm by .5cm), and then put them in boiling
water and shaped them. Same idea, almost the same result, but for about
$3. I lost most of them, but from an initial batch of about six some 10
years ago, I am still using one of them today.
