Just to be clear about this: in the case of the Accademia Chigiana,
there is no band. There is no orchestra even; a high quality
professional orchestra is used for the conducting course.

It is, rather, a series of courses intended to support young beginning
professionals in the performance of solo and chamber music. Because it
is significantly subsidised, contextual considerations of how the
Foundation wants to spend its money come into it. I consider myself
honoured to teach there, given its history and the quality of the other
instrumentalists presently involved. (Bashmet, Kashkashian, Belkin,
Verrett, Berio, Achucarro, Gallois etc.)

The requirements, in common with very many courses of this type, are
that participants be music graduates and under 30. The former is
waivable in special circumstances, the latter not. My own view is that
the latter might with advantage sometimes be waivable too.

What Jeremy has to say further, though not applicable to this situation,
contains much wisdom.
