Benjamin-

This is a question that I think you can answer, and sort of already did
in the post. But I was wondering, why exactly is it that the clarinet
sounds so different on a recording? I read the part about the clarinet's
upper harmonic structure, but what about it causes distortion? I have
several recordings of clarinet players whose sounds are such that I've
never heard live before. It's almost as if the sound becomes more
hollow. I've noticed it on a recording of myself I did at school where
the engineers used ProTools and state-of-the-art recording equipment. I
listened to it and I surely don't sound like that for real. I apologize
if this is something that has been discussed before and I've missed it.
I'm really curious about it, though!

Thanks,

Lacy
