No, you couldn't: that's why I didn't understand. The Bb clarinet I was
playing on was a copy of an instrument by Simiot of Lyons, which *does*
have a barrel, and the instrument I *might* have been playing on was a
copy of an instrument by Grenser, like the one Jane was playing on,
which likewise has a barrel.

By the way, I want to say again that this idea of a 'spherical bore'
barrel is a complete non-starter. We know very well both theoretically
and practically what such a bore modification does. It stops the
instrument from being a clarinet; in fact, from being an *instrument*,
in any reasonable sense of the word, like being able to get a sensible
scale out of it.

Beyond that, the whole point of a clarinet is that it's essentially a
cylinder closed at one end. The bell is just a device to handle the
discontinuity of the bore dimension becoming effectively infinite.
