This post makes an excellent point: We certainly don't want incompetent
people doing our surgery, nuclear power plant design, etc., etc., but it's
up to the world, not me, to determine what someone else can accomplish.
Usually, people gravitate to a profession where their own talents have the
maximum leverage. Sometimes, people's desires lead them to try to
accomplish success where they are challenged. They may succeed - they may
fail. As is stated here, many times those challenged individuals find their
own niches and are quite successful. If they end up in positions where they
cause harm to others, then there needs to be some mechanism for removing
them, but it would not be my place to tell them to stop trying. Annie's
comment about worrying about your OWN career as opposed to someone else's
competence is, in my opinion, a sign of the wisdom achieved by experience.

Recently there has been some talk on the list about the "incompetence"
of music educators and clarinetists. I want to make the point that you
can't always predict what the outcome of one's choices will be.

So you never know what the future will bring. If people are
incompetant, maybe it's better to just let them be incompetant and just
worry about your own career. ANNIE
