do you create MIDI files and play [them] through your computer or [do

(IMO) this is the same question as "Should I use my metronome while I
practice?"

If you play with yourself, instead of with a computer-generated
accompaniment (or with a Music Minus One, or whatever), you are in
danger of reinforcing some of your own faults. That is, "I sound great
when I play with myself, rhythm-wise and pitch-wise; but when I play
with the computer, something goes wrong."

(I have the same problem when I sing anywhere besides the shower stall.)

<><> And to digress further -- remember when you could buy a tape deck
and it actually came with a hole in the front to stick the microphone
plug into?

If it doesn't (and assuming you mean 'recorder' rather than just 'tape
deck', and you're complaining that the built-in microphone is no good),
then the recorder is probably inadequate in other ways as well!

Cheers,
Bill
