There aren't any holes up there, but I was reaching for _any_ possible
explanation, even though it's hard to imagine why a key would exist up
there.
Also, after your post, I debated whether the rings and other
enlargements could be reinforcements (similar to metal rings today), but
this didn't seem sensible if there was no joint to reinforce.

My only other thought is that the tenons meet each other inside the
'barrel' and therefore the 'barrel' doesn't have a bore at all?
