There's a lot of fun to be had from playing an instrument 'badly' [by which I
mean less well than one might like!] specially if you can find others to join
you. And I have no objection to a student 'wasting' their time if that is
their choice, but so often this is not the case, their teacher or their
parents or 'the system' governs the choice.
