This brings back an old memory -- my theory training was non-existent in
high school (but I did learn a lot about marching). A friend of mine in band
who knew a lot more theory than I did at the time was trying to explain key
changes to me, and she cited Barry Manilow. There was a lot of it playing on
the radio in those days, and I very quickly caught on to what she was
talking about. As opposed to a key change in Elgar, it's kind of obvious.
Especially when you do it in every single song you record.

I think to a non-musician, however, this seems pretty profound for some
reason, because the trick hasn't been explained to them.
