For those of a similar cheerful outlook the chief reference is
Fritz Spiegl's "Lives, Wives and Lovers of the Great Composers"
Marion Boyars 1996; Robert and Clara p.177-189.
[Austrian-born flute player Fritz Spiegl (1926-), principal flute Liverpool
Phil 1949-63, broadcaster and arts journalist.]
His humorous anthologies of musical ephemera are commendable,
'Music Through the Looking Glass' and 'Musical Blunders and Other
Off-beat Curiosities'.

Schumann's written music criticism (translated into English 1880, 2 Vols)
demonstrates standards that are highly erratic.

The letter of Brahms and Clara and Robert have been variously treated:
Marguerite and Jean Alley: A Passionate Friendship: Clara Schumann
and Brahms: Staples 1956, and Gerd Nauhaus: The Marriage Diaries of
Robert and Clara Schumann: Robson 1994
