It is my understanding that she had money and was serious about trying to sing. She was just BAD. Also, I believe that she went through a great many accompanists until she found one who could play with an straight face and no laughter while she sang. Her rendition of the "Queen of the Night" aria shows off even more of the terrible singing she was famous for. It is a true classic.
