My understanding was that the 9 was the last of the "large bore" Selmers,
and the 9* had the newer R-13 type "narrow bore". Whether the small or
large bore is better would depend on your own taste and what music you
planned to play.

I have a Selmer Series 9 that is still a good playing instrument. My
parents scraped together $400.00 back in 1966 and bought it for me. At the
time, a many people were using this instead of the Buffet and it recommended
by my band director who was also a clarinet player. It was my understanding
that there was a 9 and a 9-star. I have a 9-star. I am not sure what the
difference was, but I was told that the 9-star was a better instrument than
the 9. Does anybody know if this is true or not? I think I have seen nones
with and without the star, but it has been a long time since I have paid
much atttention to it.
