Immediately after this posting, a secret group of KLARINET members (who
deal with what terminology is and is not permitted to be used by
clarinetists) met via email so as to prepare a response to this
question. After a short period of consideration, we decided (and the
decision cannot be appealed) that M. Webster may not use this
terminology.

His fine for using it in the first place is $5,000. Should he use it
again, his clarinet will be taken from him by authority of the state and
it will be given to someone who signs a written agreement never to use
such terminology.

We want to qualify our reaction by saying that, while it is appropriate
to use the terminology "an edgy sound," Mr. Webster's use of "a less
edgy sound," cannot be tolerated. If that is permitted, who knows what
might come next? Why players might even buckle their knicerbockers
below the knee! Awful things like "dark sound," or "bright sound" might
creep into the language and after that there would be no controlling how
we reference clarinet sound.

Mr. Webster may send his $5,000 to me and I will make certain that it is
put to good use.

Don't do it again Mr. Webster. You have been warned.

Congratulations on your pair of full boehm clarinets. I have a pair too
and both of them go down to written low E-flat, in fact both go down to
low d with an attachment I had made. However, when it is used, the
sound gets a lot more edgy.
