Hey everyone,
I just had to tell someone about the concert I went to tonight. And I figured who better than the list! Tonight, I went to the Tilles Center out of the University of Long Island to hear a fantastic concert. It was a concert with the MET Orchestra and Levine conducting (the first time seeing him conduct, much more subdued than I anticipated from his recordings!). The concert consisted of Mozart Piano Concerto No. 20 with Phillip Biss on the Piano, Die Walkure Act 1 with Deborah Voigt as Sieglinde and the amazing but unknown voices of Clifton Forbis as Siegmund and Raymond Aceto as Hunding. But the high point for me at this concert was a performance of the Mozart clarinet concerto. And best of all, it was performed by Ricardo Morales on the Basset clarinet.
It was absolutely PHENOMINAL, hands down one of the best concerts I have ever attended, and to say Ricardo's playing was great would be an understatement! Easily the most fluid playing I have heard, nad his phrasing was top notch! As was stated a while back by I believe Tony Pay, he was able to play the low chalumeau notes without bringing attention to them, and just made the notes float out. An amazing concert, and to make it even better, I was in the front row (it pays off to reserve seats 3 months in advance!)
I noticed in the program that it stated he was playing an Ernst Hess edition. I was wondering what the version the basset players on the list used (one day, i'll get my own!)or if this is a somewhat standard edition for the basset. I noticed the cadenzas strayed from what I was used to hearing, it was a delightful change! Well, sorry about the long post, but I had to tell someone. Thanks again! Oh, and I too am going to be going to the clarinetfest and I would love to get together with anyone interested and play some music!
