Bill, I'm on my way to find a tennis ball to experiment with right now.
After the initial fitting, how about then coating the tennis ball with
epoxy resin and fiberglass (old surfers never die) and then spray
painting it black? It really sounds like an inexpensive way to have some
fun acoustically.

I have been told that the exact volume of the sphere and the exact
diameter of the hole at the far end are critical --- so much so that the
craftsman declined to make a second bell for me with slightly different
dimensions. The amount of research would have been prohibitive.

I assume that the same thought applies to a spherical barrel, and this
is (I assume) why Tony was warning me about the effect on 12ths and
altissimo.

Cheers,
Bill

If I had Stadler's mouthpiece, would I play better? Or do I need his
ligature also? Or perhaps he and I are different persons? If I had
Mozart's pen, would I compose better?
