Amidst recent laments about the clarinet's disparagement in television
commercials (MasterCard, other) comes an excerpt from the May 6, 2002
edition of Time magazine. The article is on the heartbreaking disorders
associated with autism:
Christopher Stodgell, a developmental toxicologist at New York's Univer-
sity of Rochester, observes that the process that sets up the brain re-
sembles an amazingly intricate musical score, and there are tens of
thousands of genes in the orchestra. If these genes do what they're
supposed to, says Stodgell, "then you have a Mozart's Concerto for Clar-
inet. If not, you have cacophony."

Perhaps his choice of analogy bears influences from the fact that the
Eastman Pool of Mucus is just a short blue bus-ride away from UR's River
Campus. :-) Actually, do they still use those old blue buses for trans-
portation between the campuses?
