Color me stupid, but why did you buy a clarinet with intonation problems,
barrel not having the same serial number notwithstanding? Unless the store
changed the equipment after selection but before delivery, there's no intent
to defraud. After all, I assume you played the instrument before the sale.

Many people change barrels anyway.

Subject: [kl] Mismatched Serial Numbers

Hello fellow Klarinet list members,

A few months ago, I bought a Buffet R13 from what I thought was a reputable
national chain music store. I bought the clarinet knowing it needed some
minor repairs (it was a demo model). I took the instrument to another local
music store and they did a good job fixing it. But, I've had nothing but
problems with it since then, specifically with intonation. I noticed the
other night that the serial number on the barrel is not the same as those on
the other parts of the instrument. I have a feeling that the national chain
music store just happened to swap barrels on my instrument with another one.
Is it normal for a barrel to have a different serial number than the rest
of the clarinet? I went back to playing my Selmer Series 9 because I know
all the parts belong together :)

Thanks for your replies,
Howard Shapiro
