I laughed out loud to think that you would take issue with the "realism"
of the tentacles not touching the clarinet, while apparently finding no
fault with the realism of a squid playing the clarinet at all, or the
realism of playing a clarinet underwater.
IMO, you have highlighted an important issue in any art --- including
music. The artist by definition must add something to his work that
other people either don't perceive unassisted on their own or that
doesn't/can't exist.
Thus any art must deal with 'suspension of disbelief'.
Have you ever heard a bird who can sing Mahler 1? Does 'Ma Vlast'
summon images to your mind that are grander than a 'real' countryside?
Does "76 Trombones" make you want to march in your imagination in a way
that exceeds your actual physical ability?
In fact, an 'image' (visual, acoustical, tactile, or whatever) is by
definition never identical to the object or event being imaged.
Am I complaining about this? No, absolutely not. I think you have
highlighted a critical and important aspect of any artistic endeavor.
Cheers,
Bill

If I had Stadler's mouthpiece, would I play better? Or do I need his
ligature also? Or perhaps he and I are different persons? If I had
Mozart's pen, would I compose better?
