I am playing on a Selmer metal five piece clarinet in Bb as I was reading the
posts
A friend of mine owns a pair (Bb and A) sterling silver double walled
clarinets made by Haynes of Boston. The Haynes had a valve at the top and
the bottom which allowed air to be blown through the instruments to get them
up to temperature quickly.

The Selmer I have is ser #478+++and according to Jerome Selmer was
manufactured in the early 1930s.

I believe it was a serious project but given up because of the concept of the
student clarinets of the time.

Just a few cents worth.

I belieive the instruments played in Boston were Selmers and the clarinetist
in question was berated for using them. Anyone know more of that story?
