Hi all,
As I may have mentioned a while back, I'm in the process of trying to buy a
new pair of clarinets, and I'm just wondering about this issue (having
already settled on Buffet). Yes, I know, I'm making that big fuss over
equipment again.... ;-)
I trawled the archives a bit and came up with a few titbits, so here's my
impression of the differences with "normal" wooden clarinets.
Difference in sound: negligible (probably more imagined due to prejudice
about "synthetic" clarinets). I have heard it said that Green Line is less
"warm" than wood but some of the warmest playing I have heard has been on
Green Line instruments!
Weight: Green Line is slightly heavier than wood but this is probably not a
big deal.
Stability: Green Line really is more "stable" and less sensitive to e.g.
temperature change than wood. It also is easier to look after than wood.
Looks: obviously the wood looks nicer, especially if it's the unstained wood
used on Prestige instruments. ;-)
Price: the salesman in the store where I will be buying said he felt it was
wrong for Buffet to charge the same price for a cheaper material.
Personally I feel that the price is for functionality. ;-)
In summary I was thinking that the added stability and easier maintenance
might make the Green Line a better option for me, without any noticeable
drawbacks.
Any thoughts?
Cheers,
-- Joe
