Joseph -

For the more mature embouchure, don't forget the Vandoren V-12 reed. A much
better reed than the Vandoren regular, for the more advanced player. Also,
I have found the Rovner Eddie Daniels Ligature to be better than the regular
Rovners and well worth the modest price difference.

I feel that the Rovner Ligature helps me get more "good" reeds out of a box.
That is, with the help of my own methods of "tweaking" the reeds. (Nothing
original, just tips and methods that I have gleaned from Klarinet.)

I would say the same is certainly true of reeds - e.g. I would recommend
Vandoren Traditional to anyone who asked (and my memory of Rico Royal is not
good, although I've enjoyed playing on their Grand Concert Select). And by
the same token I would say if you have a Rovner ligature you're not going to
suffer by it (unless you buy the Eddie Daniels one, in which case your
wallet will certainly suffer).

Even in the case of mouthpieces, which are much more a personal choice,
there are some "obvious" first picks - Vandoren again are good and I've
heard that people rave about Bay or Pillinger mouthpieces.

So it's not a case of being unable to make recommendations, rather, it's
just that you have to bear in mind that your personal setup may mean that
something different is required.
