with the instruments I'm already used to, this idea of reeds,
mouthpieces and ligatures being completely a *personal* choice was
strange to me at first. With an acoustic guitar for instance, although
some people might prefer a particular brand of string, generally
speaking some brands are definitely better than others and you can
safely recommend them due to their superior quality.

There definitely are 'pieces of junk' available for clarinets, and there
is also equipment whose performance leans in a certain direction. Thus
(once again) I agree that such conversations can be useful.

If I had Stadler's mouthpiece, would I play better? Or do I need his
ligature also? Or perhaps he and I are different persons? If I had
Mozart's pen, would I compose better?
