My first teacher was Rinaldo Massimino (affectionately known as Massi) and I
had him in the fourth grade. He was my teacher all through elementary
school. I don't recall ever learning bad habits from him. I loved going to
band class though. My daughter had him when she was in elementary school.
When she went to summer band camp, he was her band director there. He still
plays bass in the orchestra and conducts for some of the pit gigs that I
play. I am 51 and he is in his late seventies. He can play just about any
instrument and is great fun at a party. I hope he sticks around for a long
time to come (wishful thinking!). I also wish every kid could have someone
to emulate who was as good a musician and nice as a person as he was and
still is.

The worst teacher I ever had was our youth symphony director, Mr. Wiseman.
He was a violinist and used to beat time with his bow on the edge of a music
stand. I have fond memories of playing "Mary Had a Little Lamb" while the
rest of the orchestra slaved over "Poet and Peasant Overture" or something
of that nature. He could never figure out quite what it was that was wrong.
One time our tuba player even played some of the solos from "Tubby the Tuba"
when we were supposed to be playing "Aida". I was also pretty good at
shooting orthodontic elastics out of my mouth as he passed by. So many kids
had braces that he could never pin down where they came from. Those were
some of the best laughs I ever had. Oh, to be a kid again! In my next life
though I want Annie Lenoir and Tony Pay as my best music buddies. They
would definitely be a good influence on any child with a creative mind.

My name is Jean Marie, I'm a college student in my second year. And I to
am new to this list.
My teacher this year has talked a lot about my very first lesson teacher
and a lot of tihings he may have done wrong. Like tap the beat on me
harder and harder if I couldn't keep time, or make me feel ashamed if my
lesson wasn't prefect in a week and punish me with memorization work. And
he's been trying to figure out to what extent this may have impacted me.
And I'm wondering what your first teachers were like. And what age did
you start lessons, I started in sixth grade, and had been playing since
third.
